Medical Application And Research Of Sialic Acid

In medicine, the glycolipids that contain sialic acid are called gangliosides, which play a very important role in the production and development of the brain and nervous system. Meanwhile, animal studies have shown that decreased levels of ganglioside are associated with early malnutrition and decreased learning ability, and sialic acid supplementation can improve learning behavior in animals. An adequate supply of sialic acid may be especially important for proper development of brain function in children with low birth weight. Once a baby is born, the sialic acid in breast milk is essential to ensure their normal development. The study showed that sialic acid levels in mothers decreased over time after delivery. Therefore, consistent intake of adequate sialic acid during and after pregnancy can help maintain sialic acid levels in the body. Moreover, sialic acid levels also showed a clear correlation with DHA levels, suggesting that it is most likely related to the development of brain structure and function in infants, and that both may be beneficial for early brain development.
